6 Ways To Develop Mindfulness In Kids

Mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to pay attention, to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions. In short, it helps with emotional regulation and cognitive focus.

My 2-year-old son A, one fine day -

A (out of no where) : mumma, how to do dhyaan mudra? Pls do it for me
Me : ok here you go (and now you can see my son's picture doing dhyaan mudra, above in this post)

And then he said, 'family meditation time' ... And we both did Om chanting, Gayatri Mantra and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra chanting together.

If you are wondering how to develop mindfulness in your toddler or how to introduce meditation or any spiritual exercise to your toddler (which is very important in today's world), here are some tips on the same -

Start With Yourself
Start doing it yourself from today. Toddlers LOVE to imitate adults. You will wonder how beautifully they will start following you in no time & they will be proud of this fact too.

Set A Rhythm
Waldorf philosophy talks so much about setting a rhythm in a child's life. It makes the life of this little being more predictable & setting a rhythm has so many more benefits. Set an everyday rhythm for any mindfuness exercise - which means meditating or chanting mantras at a specific time of the day every day so that the practice is set into the daily rhythm of toddlers - remember they do not have much sense of time or days as yet. We have started this 'family meditation time' as a ritual with me, my husband and my son every night to introduce him to what is called 'silence lesson' in Montessori. Mindfulness and meditation come naturally to us - I'm an energy healer and Reiki practitioner myself and husband is a serious Yoga practitioner.

Sweet & Simple
Toddlers cannot process much so initially keep it super simple so that they are not overwhelmed with the entire exercise. You can even start with a simple Om chanting two or three times or just counting their breaths up to 5.

Keep Your Expectations Zero
Initially, when we started family meditation time, my son just roamed around in the room while I & my husband chanted mantras. But remember that children are listening & observing all the time, even the time when we think they are ignoring everything around them. Gradually he started sitting with us during chanting & now he chants along with us when he is in a good mood, but with eyes open hehe. When he is in a super playful mood, he even monkeys around on our laps while we chant. So the key here is to be consistent in our practice & kids will assimilate the practice gradually, but may not exhibit it always.

Do Not Limit Mindfulness To Meditation Or Chanting
Mindfulness is not just sitting with eyes closed & chanting mantras or concentrating on the breath. It also means being present & aware in your day to day tasks. One great way to be mindful when you are outdoors with your toddler is to make him listen the bird sounds, sound of the trees waving, sound of the water flowing in the streams and so on. We do this with our son & now he himself tells me when we are in a park, mumma, listen the koyal singing, mumma which bird's sound is this, mumma, I hear an ambulance siren and so on. And many times we realize these sounds after our son tells us! And I wonder when did we lose this capability of registering everything that is happening around us...

Prayers & Gratitude
It is a great idea to involve the little ones in prayers. It is equally important to teach them to express gratitude. The only way is to say grace & courtesy words often ourselves - to our little imitating monkeys :) It is so heart warming when my son says sweet thank yous when I set up new Montessori shelf activities for him or when I get him his favorite stuff to eat etc. And it is so funny & amusing to listen to something like this from my son - mumma, I got a glass of water for you, say thank you :) :)

Please do share what else worked for you in developing mindfulness in your kids!

Happy Parenting :)

Observe - Meditate - Follow Your Intuitions - Work Of A Parent - Quote By Rudolf Steiner - Waldorf

Rudolf Steiner’s advice to the first Waldorf kindergarten teacher in the early 1920s was these lines in this poster!

Observe the children.
Actively meditate.
Follow your intuitions.
Work so that all your actions are worthy of imitation.

This is a great reminder for me, that I would like to revisit every single day! Amidst all the daily routines, episodes of highs & lows, instances of handling tantrums of a toddler, if there is something superlative I can do for my toddler, it is to be mindful, and follow these beautiful lines, and then everything will fall into place in the long term.

It is okay if some day I am not able to do anything productive with my child, it is okay if some day me & my child just laze around in the bed together, it is okay if some day he is not learning anything new, it is okay be slow, kind & calm to yourself, so that you echo & reflect the same to your child.

Because at the end of the day, we need happier & calmer individuals in the future, more than learned & intellectual ones. Learnings will automatically follow :)

Sanskrit Mantras By A 20 Months Old (VLOG)

I have been reciting some Sanskrit mantras to my son since he was 3 months old. After bath, when I get him ready, I recite the mantras. The motive behind this exercise was to impart some positivity & stimulation of his senses. I never expected him to learn the mantras.

Two days back (he is 20 months old now), I just said a part of the mantra & he completed that particular line & I was literally happily shocked that he had learnt many of those mantras. I am sure he had learnt a lot earlier but he is able to articulate them only now.

Why Sanskrit?
It is a well known fact that the recitation of Sanskrit language improves the speech of the children. And of course there is so much positivity in these mantras.

Here is the video of Sanskrit Mantras recited by my 20 months old son.

Vakratund Mahakaay
Gayatri Mantra
Tvamev Mata

Children absorb so much from their environment, we cannot even comprehend. So let us give them a rich environment which stimulates their senses, give them exposure to lot of things. You never know when they surprise you. Kids are a total surprise package!

The Energy Is Always There - Ganesha Says

As I saw the Ganesh visarjan proceedings with my toddler from the gallery, an old memory flashed blazingly through my eyes. People were so happy there. But suddenly I saw my eyes going moist, my throat getting dry and my heart going deep into the ocean of memories, touching my twin girls & coming back to me to be with my toddler.

Those people dancing there in front of Ganesha, they had waited for Ganesha for one whole year. I had waited for my twin girls for fourteen odd months, that included torturous fertility treatments too.

They were so happy to bring Him home. I was so happy to see my girls in reality when they came out of my womb.

They had never held Him in their hands, except for one or two people who made Ganesha seated on his designated place. I never got to hold my girls in my arms. They were directly shifted from the operation theatre to NICU.

They had decorated Ganesha with flowers, garlands & graffiti. My girls were decorated with tons of wires & equipments in the NICU.

They visited & offered Ganesha food/prasad everyday. I offered them pumped breast milk everyday.

After 10 days, they had accepted that it's time for Ganesha to take his leave. They were happy to say bye bye. Till 11th day, both my girls were gone one after the other! I could not accept it. I was devastated.

Ganesha's energy is always there with us, it is just that the physical form of Ganesha comes in our homes for ten days.

Energies of my girls will always be there with me & my family. They just appeared in physical form for a couple of days.

This spiritual understanding came to me after a few months of this episode. I am grateful to the universe that it eventually came to me. It helped me regain my sanity & I'm so much more well equipped emotionally & mentally now. It had to come this hard way, and it did.

The world is energy. Physicality is just one aspect of it.
