Women Who Inspire - Shrinithi Venkatesa Mohan From Shiksha Junior Preschools - Interview Series

women who inspire shrinithi mohan shiksha juniors preschool interview the k junction

I'm so excited to present this interview series for all you lovely readers of my blog. This series - "Women Who Inspire" features interviews of some lovely ladies that I know. I love what they do & I admire them a lot. I thought of passing some inspiration to all of you too! This interview series will give you a little sneak peek into the lives of these women.

Today, let us hear from Shrinithi Venkatesa Mohan (SVM) who is the founder of Shiksha Junior Preschools, Shiksha School For Teachers & Parents & Shiksha School For Autism.

Shrinithi Venkatesa Mohan, from Coimbatore,Tamil Nadu, graduated in Computer Science Engineering and started her career working as a software developer. But the entrepreneurial bug bit her real hard right after she graduated and she was looking at opportunities. She went abroad for her Masters in Computer Networking and living the American dream in NYC. But somewhere she was never satiated with what she was doing and thoughts of heading back to India and to her hometown to start something on her own were there. Her husband was in London during the time and they made a conscious decision to move back to Coimbatore. She was going the family way that time and tried different hats from tailoring to skill training to getting back to IT to what not. But being the mother of her newborn daughter made her choose a career that will accommodate her daughter and her limited work timings and that drew her to starting her career as an early childhood educator.

Shrinithi's ventures include -

Shiksha Juniors Preschools

Shiksha School for Teachers and Parents – A Montessori and early childhood training institute that skills teachers and parents enabling them to facilitate better learning experience for their children.

Shiksha School for Autism and other needs

You can check out all the interviews in this "Women Who Inspire" series HERE.

K : Think back to five years ago. Did you envision this is where you would be?

SVM : Yes!

K : How did the idea for your business come about?

SVM : After becoming a mother.

K : Describe your typical day.

SVM : I have setup businesses in such a way it functions even without me being involved in every day operations. I work from home more these days with my second born being 8 months old.

K : How many hours do you work a day on average?

SVM : For me it is all integrated I can never segregate my work and family hours.

K : What are your ideals?

SVM : Be honest and open about what you can offer and what you cannot offer in your business. Never regret to say "no". Lot of times entrepreneurs are scared to say no in the fear of losing customers. I don’t believe in over promising and under delivering.

K : What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

SVM : When I realize the impact that we are making in so many peoples' lives as an entrepreneur.

K : How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

SVM : I live in a joint family setup and regularly communicate with my in-laws, partner and kids about what I am going through, share my aspirations and ups and downs. I think it has helped me a lot in building my career.

K : What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?

SVM : I wouldn’t call it a sacrifice but I have given up a lot of social life and other fancies to be diligent in my work :)

K : What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve made?

SVM : I always have rushed into decision making in the early part of my career, now I am much more mature in decision making and do not act based on emotions in my venture.

K : Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?

SVM : We want to impact a large number of parents-teachers-children.

K : In one word, characterize your life as an entrepreneur

SVM : Hyper!

Thank you so much Shrinithi for taking out time for this chit chat! It was a wonderful talk session and I wish you good health, peace, happiness & success in your venture!

How To Choose The Right Preschool For Your Child. This article showcases the facebook live video I did on this topic recently as a part of my #TuesdayLive Facebook live series.

Parents were never spoiled with so many choices when it comes to preschool selection for kids. In our generation, we hardly had a choice. But today you can hear options like convent school, Montessori school, play way school, Reggio school, Waldorf school, traditional school, gurukul school, multiple intelligence based school, hybrid school & what not.

Not every parent would know what does that actually mean! So how to choose the right preschool?

In this video, I will give you some tips about making the right preschool selection for your child & your family.

Storytelling - Pratham Books - Kottavi Raja & His Sleepy Kingdom - #Pbchamp

Pratham Books has this wonderful initiative One Day One Story where all over the country, one book is read to children. The K Junction registered for this wonderful opportunity and became a #pbchamp to tell the story of "Kottavi Raja & His Sleepy Kingdom".

Kuhoo Gupta had a wonderful time telling the story of "Kottavi Raja & his sleepy kingdom" by Pratham publishers as a part of their one day one story initiative to 30+ kids. The kids really enjoyed the session and she was so happy to listen to their lovely words while they were going back - "mam bye bye", "mam mazaa aaya", "mam acchi story thi", "mam aur games khelein?"

She conducted two activities after the story telling session -
  • She pretended to be Kottavi Raja who could finally sleep well after so many days. Divided the kids into 3 teams and every team was supposed to arrange themselves into a height-wise line without making a sound or else Kottavi Raja will wake up. It was hard for the kids to keep quiet and do the needful. There were giggles and whispers.

  • Now all the children were supposed to pretend as sleeping and they were made to sit in a circle. She gave each team a paper and a crayon. Every child had to draw something on the paper with eyes closed and pass on the paper to the next child in the team. At the end we saw papers of all three teams and they had some wonderful artwork drawn randomly by every kid eyes closed. Then they told her, "I made this sun, I made this mountain, etc etc".

All in all, a fun and satisfying experience with these little curious enthusiastic bunch of kids .

6 Important Steps To Prepare A Toddler For Daycare

The transition of a toddler from home to daycare or playgroup or preschool is often dreaded. I too was very skeptical as to how my 17 months old son will fare in this transition of home to a two hours daycare session. But in just seven days, he was happily settled in there, which includes two days of being sick!

I will share below how we handled this transition in the calmest way I could have imagined.

Self-Calming Phase By Positive Affirmations

I knew the first thing I should do is to calm myself and be confident of the fact that he will do great. So months before we were supposed to enroll him, I slept with these positive affirmations. It is a part of neurolinguistic programming, the affirmations start getting into your subconscious mind. Here is what I affirmed. (A here means his name initials)

  • A is adjusting very beautifully in the daycare
  • A is happy in daycare
  • A is cooperating with mumma in this transition

Reading Relevant Books To The Child

After I got confident of the transition, I started to hunt for some books that will explain how a daycare/preschool/playgroup is so much fun! A just LOVES books so I thought it couldn't be better if I try to inculcate love for daycare/playgroup by reading him books. Luckily I found such books soon. I read these books to him every day with a highly animated voice so that he understood the essence of the stories more. He started loving this book 'Goat Goes To Playgroup' and every day in our reading sessions, he would take out this book & ask me to read. This stage was a success again. I was delighted to see he was happy with the term & concept of playgroup.

Sleep Talk

Two weeks before we were supposed to start the daycare, I started giving him sleep talk, I learnt about sleep talk in ISP course. In sleep talk, after the child is asleep, you are supposed to say positive present tense sentences for the behavior or solution you want. This again works on the principle that the affirmations go into the subconscious of the child. I started saying the same affirmations to A that I told to myself.

Packing His Favourite Toys In His Favorite Bag

My husband had got his beautiful bag in the shape of a car from Hong Kong. His love for cars & other vehicles is IMMENSE. So my husband didn't think twice before buying this bag for him, though it was a little pricey, talk about being an indulgent parent ;) So I packed some of his favourite stuff like auto, shark, pigeon and few of his favourite books so that he feels something familiar in the otherwise unfamiliar daycare surroundings. He was super happy carrying his bag on the first day to the daycare, a success again. Babysteps :)

Making The Daycare Space Familiar

The more familiar I could make this new space for A, the better he would adjust. So the first day, I clicked some pics of A playing with the see-saw, slides, toys and the teachers/caretakers there. I used to show these pics to him at home and tell him their names & tell him that this is your playgroup, you have lots of fun there with friends. He started to say aunty-aunty at home whenever I mentioned playgroup. He made a good connection with an aunty there.

I stayed with him in the play area of their premises for three days for some time and played with him while he made friends with the teachers and caregivers there. Then I would leave him there, come downstairs & wait till he was ready to go back home. He cried initially & it felt terrible! I felt I'm being too selfish but I told myself this is not going to happen every day & I needed to be strong. I gave him heart to heart thoughts while waiting for him downstairs to be calm & happy there, and that mumma will get you back in some time. I think it helped too. Everyday A jumped out of excitement when I told him we are going to playgroup, pick up his car bag and try to open the main door of our house to go out. I felt happy for the fact that he wasn't dreading his time at playgroup.

No Sneaking Away

After three days, I didn't go to the play area to leave him. I let the aunty take him upstairs so that he understands mumma is not supposed to go to the play area. The IMPORTANT point here is I never sneaked away leaving him with the caregivers. I honestly told him that you will be having lots of fun with your friends, aunty and mam, while mumma does some office work. So go & enjoy your time. Sneaking away behind the child's back only increases the anxiety & you lose the trust. The child might get adjusted but that trauma of mumma getting disappeared might be with him for long. Children understand everything, so it's better to convey the reality to them, they do understand. By the sixth day, A was playing happily with the toys, with his friends & aunty. I felt at the top of the world!!! A huge sigh of relief as he got adjusted.

The seventh day, A went towards aunty on his own, even had a banana in the playgroup. What more can I ask for!

I think it is not just the working moms (office goers) who need a daycare. Even SAHM or WFH moms need it. My reasons for sending him to daycare were -

  1. I wanted few hours for myself to breathe & to do something for my own self. It's not being selfish but a rejuvenation that I need, to be able to sustain happily whole day running behind my toddler & to be able to handle the difficult moments that any toddler throws quite regularly.
  2. We are a nuclear family and I wanted A to socialize a bit more. He anyways gets bored at home with seeing just his mom whole day, a social interaction never hurts.

I hope these tips will help you when you send your child to a daycare or playgroup or preschool. Do let me know what else worked for you :)

Happy Parenting!
