How To Teach Even & Odd Numbers Using Counters - Montessori Math

montessori maths counters cards even odd numbers kids k junction

Check out this simple DIY Montessori Math exercise to explain & teach the concept of even & odd numbers to children. Indirectly it also prepares the child for divisibility of numbers.

If you have been following this blog closely, I has posted about the work with Montessori beads done by my 3 year old son. If not, then you can click right HERE to check that in detail. That exercise was basically to associate digits to the quantities. Quantification is very important to understand.

He has been practicing that for long now so I thought it is a good time to expose him to the concept of even & odd numbers. For that I took out my versatile wooden digit counters from the below set & Montessori beads.

If you do not have wooden digit counters, you can easily make paper cards and write digits on them by hand.

Then I asked him to arrange the beads in the correct fashion. And he did it quite nicely & confidently. Check out in my Instagram video where he is counting & arranging the beads. It is hilarious!

After that I asked him to place the walnut shells in pairs below each digit as per their quantities. Walnut shells make great counters, right?

And then I told him a quick story. Those which are in pairs have friends to play with and they are called even numbers. Those which have one shell left alone are always looking for a friend to play with, they are called odd numbers.

And this little story gave him a good grasp of the concept! Listen to his answers in my Instagram video below when I asked him whether this number is odd or even for couple of numbers!

A post shared by Kuhoo Gupta (The K Junction) (@kuhoogupta) on

Purpose Of This Exercise

Direct
  • To reinforce the knowledge that each number is made up of separate quantities.
  • To indicate the odd and even numbers

Indirect
  • To prepare for the divisibility of numbers

You can see the exact presentation of this Montessori exercise HERE.

Which Math exercise/activity have you done with your child recently? Share your blog post in comments below, I would love to see & get some inspiration.

Montessori Bead Stairs - Math Exercise For Preschoolers

Montessori Bead Stairs is a standard Montessori math material in a 3-6 years Montessori classroom (House of Children). Let us see how it is used for learning numbers & how my 3 year old boy used it.

This activity helps the child learn to associate the quantities 1 through 9 with their numerals. It also introduces the child to the material used in the Teens Beads, the Teens Board, the Short Chains, the Long Chains, Addition With Bead Bars, Subtraction With Bead Bars, and Multiplication With Bead Bars.

Material

The bead stair consists of 9 segments of wire strung with one to nine beads. Every number of beads is done in a different color: 1-red, 2-green, 3-peach, 4-yellow, 5-light blue, 6-lavender, 7-white, 8-brown, 9-dark blue. The beads should be as spherical as possible so that they are equally wide as long.

You can check out the detailed presentation of this material HERE.

Ideally the end product would look something like this & the control of error is creating the triangle.

Bead Stair 10.JPG
Img Source - montessorialbum.com

But this is what my 3 year old boy did independently. We follow Montessori at home so I am not strictly concerned about the correct formation of the triangle as far as he is getting the concept right.

Montessori Color Tablets Box 3 - Extensions, DIY & Alternatives (Guest Post By Devi Sekaran)

Montessori Colour Tablets are sensorial materials found in the Montessori 3-6 years classroom. They assist with visual discrimination and perception of colours. They come in three boxes - 1, 2 & 3. Today I have a guest blogger with me - Devi Sekaran, a mom who is passionate about Montessori & does a lot of Montessori inspired works with her kids. Read on to see her kids' experience & extension works with Montessori color box 3, a standard Montessori material used for color gradation. At the end, I will also share an alternative educational material for color gradation & how you can make your own DIY Montessori color tablets using free printables.

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that every child’s sensorial experiences begin when the child is born. And over the years, she created many sensorial materials that covers the five senses: tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory senses. She believed that children should be given as much sensorial experiences as possible. All the materials in a Montessori classroom are carefully designed to incorporate ‘Control of Error’ and to ‘Isolate the Quality’ in order to develop a child’s sense to understand the environment around him or her.

One of my favourite sensorial materials is the Colour Box 3 which is used to develop a child’s visual sense. In a 3-6 Montessori Classroom, a child is introduced to Colour Box 1, then Colour Box 2 and finally Colour Box 3. In our home, we do not have Colour Box 1 and 2 but we do have Colour Box 3 and it has been an amazing addition to our shelf. This material is great for visual discrimination and other extensions involving language and mathematics.

Both my daughters have been introduced to Colour Box 3 in their schools while we use the Colour Box 3 at home to do other extension works. Check out the pictures below on how we use it in our home.

Here my daughter (4 year old) is using the Colour Box 3 and the DIY continent images. She matched the continent images to the colour tablets and continued with grading.

Here, my daughter (5+ years) used the Colour Box 3 and Colour Resemblance Pegs to do colour sorting and as an extension we did skip counting and x7.

Using the Colour Box 3 and Colour Resemblance Pegs, my daughter (5+ years) created this beautiful spiral pattern.

You can read more about Montessori Colour Box 3 HERE.

You can also DIY these color tablets if this sounds expensive to you to buy. HERE is a great DIY tutorial for color box 3. You can download the free printable of color box 3 from HERE.

Happy Montessori-ing!!!

Thanks a lot Devi for sharing your wonderful experience & extension exercises with the color box 3. Lots of love to your kids!

How To Make Toran With Leaves - Montessori Inspired Activities For Kids For Dussehra

dussehra activity kids preschooler toddler children toran practical life montessori fine motor

Dussehra is here & I love to involve my preschooler in the festivities in a hands-on Montessori inspired way. If you are looking for activity to do with your child this Dussehra, this post is for you. I will also share some more activities in the coming days that you can try out. Traditionally we make toran out of Mango leaves & hang it on our main door. Check out how your child can make a toran step by step. This is a great practical life activity, enhances fine motor skills and is engaging too!

First we went out to our society garden to hunt a mango tree. We found it but I could not reach the leaves. So I offered my son to settle with Ashoka tree leaves & he agreed. I got a branch from that tree.

Here my son is plucking out leaves from the branch. It is a fine motor activity. It is not easy for a preschooler to do this exercise :)

You might also like these Montessori inspired activities that I did with my son last year for Dussehra.

Then I gave him a punching machine and showed him how to punch a hole in a leaf. He found it a little difficult to hold a leaf in one hand & press the punching machine using another hand because the machine was a little hard to press. So I held the leaves for him in between the punching machine & he pressed & punched the leaves one by one. Punching is again a fine motor practical life activity.

Then he laced the leaves into a fancy thread one by one. Again a fine motor activity.

He was so happy to make a toran finally :) he held it with pride!

He insisted to put the toran on our main door. Since the length of the toran was not enough, I just taped it on our main safety door at a low height :) He helped me cut the tape using scissors. Using a scissor is a great prewriting activity and he is loving using scissors these days!

So here is our toran made by my 2 year old son!

Do share what activities you did with your child this Dussehra!

Maria Montessori - Free Ebook - Absorbent Mind & Book Recommendations

maria montessori free ebook absorbent mind

Dr. Maria Montessori is the founder of the Montessori method of education. She started her first classroom “Casa dei Bambini” or Children’s House in 1907.

Montessori method of education stresses the importance of respecting children – “Help me to help myself”.

Maria Montessori was born on August 31st 1870. It was her birthday yesterday and I cannot say enough how much I owe to this dynamic and innovative woman as far as my parenting journey is considered. The Montessori philosophy changed my perspective as a parent, it was a paradigm shift I must admit.

So here is a BIG THANK YOU to Maria Montessori for guiding me and many many parents & caregivers!

If you are new to this, you might want to read the biography of Maria Montessori HERE.

According to Montessori, the goal of education is “to be able to find activities that are so intrinsically meaningful that we want to throw ourselves into them”. According to her, the child builds itself through experiences on the environment. On this notion, she developed a set of didactic materials which leads to sensory education, muscular coordination, and language development. These didactic materials have built-in “control of error” which gives the child concrete proof of whether its work is right or wrong, this also frees the teacher from being the person of reinforcement.

FREE EBOOK - ABSORBENT MIND BY MARIA MONTESSORI

Here is one book on her philosophy that is written by herself - the very famous ABSORBENT MIND.

It is a must-read for everyone who is interested in Montessori. This book is not a practical guide, it doesn't tell you, what to do or give you certain activities, it is a very philosophical book. It opens your eyes and makes you look differently at children, childhood, society.

Montessori is so much more about the attitude, about philosophy and principles than about certain tools, materials or activities. All the great work and Montessori-inspired materials & activities are quite useless, if you don't get the philosophy right.

And now lastly, here is the FREE EBOOK version of this awesome book ABSORBENT MIND.

If you wish to read this book in paperback, here is the Amazon affiliate link (with no extra cost to you). Buy using this link to happily support this blog of mine.

I would also suggest these books for some additional reading on Montessori. You would love them for sure!

Earn some good karma and share this post with an awesome FREE resource with your friends or fellow parents/caregivers who would be interested in Montessori.
